The Amir of Kuwait has been thanked by the head of the World Food Programme for his support for humanitarian causes, particularly the Syria crisis.

Ertharin Cousin, the Executive Director of the UN World Food Programme (WFP), said she could not "stress too highly what an immense service the Amir has done, not least by hosting two donor conferences for Syria."

She said the two conferences "were landmarks in mobilizing the international community".

WFP also welcomed a "generous contribution" of US$35 million from the State of Kuwait announced on Monday to help provide much-needed food assistance to tens of thousands of Syrians both inside and outside their country.

The agency said Kuwait had shown generosity towards UN agencies with a contribution of $500 million announced on 7 April.

On Monday, Kuwait also gave close to $250 million to humanitarian agencies, including the UN, the International Committee of the Red Cross and non-governmental organizations to help people affected by conflict in Syria.
