WOMEN: International Women's Day: "Gender equality is progress for all"

International Women's Day, observed on 8th March, this year comes on the eve of the 2015 deadline for meeting the Millennium Development Goals or MDGs. One of these eight goals, set by world leaders in 2000, is the promotion of gender equality and empowerment of women. The theme for this year's observance of International Women's Day is "Equality for Women is Progress for All." UN Women is the United Nations entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. UN Radio's Derrick Mbatha sat down with its Executive Director, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.

Second wave of refugees from Syria enter Lebanon


More than 10,000 Syrians have fled into Lebanon since a fresh offensive on the city of Yabroud and its outskirts began on 12 February, according to the UN Refugee Agency. Syria has been at civil war for the last three years during which time more than 100,000 people have been killed. Given the scale of the influx, the agency says, providing assistance is proving a challenge.

Carnival goers in Colombia educated about human trafficking


Carnival goers in Colombia are being educated about the risks of human trafficking at one of the country's best known festivals…the Carnival of Barranquilla. The Carnival Queen and King have teamed up with the United Nations and will both be wearing the Blue Heart, an international symbol against the crime. The South American country is one of the world's main sources of trafficked women. Daniel Dickinson spoke to Carlos Perez, from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in the Colombian capital, Bogota.
