A new record for the number of international patent applications filed in 2013 has been set by the United States of America (US) and China according to a new report by the UN intellectual property agency.

International trademark and industrial design filings have also achieved new record-breaking levels.

For the first time, the total number of patents filed has surpassed the 200,000 mark, the World International Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) said.

Applicants seeking protection internationally for their inventions file under WIPO's Patent and Cooperation Treaty (PCT).

The PCT applications filed in 2013 represent a 5.1 per cent growth compared to 2012.

The US and China together account for 56 per cent and 29 per cent of the total PCT growth.

The US remains the most active user of the PCT system, Japan the second highest user with China having surpassed Germany to become the third largest user of the system.
