An announcement by the United States to transition key internet domain name oversight to the global community, has been welcomed by the United Nations.

The UN has been advocating a multi-stakeholder model of internet governance for a number of years.

It says such a model will help to ensure a single, open, free, secure and trustworthy Internet.

For over a decade, the U.S. Department of Commerce, has been the watchdog of sales and assignments of web domains such as ".com" or ".org".

Daniel Dickinson asked Tomas Lamanauskas, Head, of the Corporate Strategy Division at the International telecommunication Union about the management of the Internet.
