The world can be transformed if girls are empowered according to the head of the UN Population Agency, UNFPA.

The agency has teamed up with the World Bank to promote regional peace, security and sustainable development in the Great Lakes region of Africa.

They are collaborating on a number of programmes which address the challenges faced by women, girls and other vulnerable populations.

Speaking ahead of a high-level panel on gender violence, UNFPA chief, Babatunde Osotimehin said that more needs to be done to empower girls.

"Girls are married away early. They have no agency of their own, they cannot decide who they want to be and they cannot reach their full potential. We need to work very hard because I think if you solve the problem of the adolescent girl, if you are able to empower them, give them full agency and if they are able to take decisions about their lives, then we will be able to transform the world."

The high-level panel is being held as part of the 58th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.
