Sustainable development "needs women's empowerment"

Listen /

Tarja Halonen

Women should be empowered and gender equality needs to be assured if sustainable development is to succeed according to the former Finnish President Tarja Halonen.

Ms Halonen made the remarks as she chaired a high-level thematic debate at the UN General Assembly on the role of women and children in the Post-2015 Agenda.

The General Assembly has been tasked with defining a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which will replace the Millennium Development Goals at the end of 2015.

Ms Halonen said that women are central to the SDGs.

“It is evident if women can’t actively participate in society, half of the world’s population is left aside. So for the societies to be successful, we need women’s empowerment, gender equality and protection of sexual and reproductive rights. This way we can enhance sustainable development.”

A proposal on the list of SDGs will be debated by the General Assembly in September this year.
