Martin Kobler

Rebels in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have been urged by the most senior UN official in the country to surrender and join the national disarmament and demobilization process.

Martin Kobler, the Head of MONUSCO, the UN peacekeeping mission in the country, called on the FDLR rebels to immediately break away from their leaders or be forcibly disarmed.

The UN Spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric said Mr Kobler welcomed government operations against the rebels.

"From the DR Congo, the UN Mission in that country announced today that it supported direct engagement alongside the Congolese army for current operations against the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, the FDLR and other affiliated armed groups."

Mr Kobler said the military campaign aims to neutralize the FDLR and will help to re-establish State authority, in accordance with MONUSCO's mandate.
