Forests and fashion might seem a world apart but are interlinked according to senior UN forestry expert.

"Forests for Fashion-Fashion for Forests" is an initiative that is being launched on the International Day of Forests on March 21st.

The initiative seeks to demonstrate that new forest products can contribute to a greener economy while being fashionable and affordable.

The message is clear: our choices, even on how we dress, can make a difference and lead us to a more sustainable world.

Dominique Reeb is a senior official involved in Forestry and Timber.

"I think the better choice is of course an informed choice – when you know what you want to buy and what type of product you are buying, I think this is where you can make a big difference. So if you go to a shop to buy whatever piece of clothes you will see the one which is produced from wood fibers and these wood fibers are sustainably produced from forests which are sustainably managed. You will make of course make a difference by buying this type of product than buying the one which is derived from oil or this type of product."

Mr. Reeb also explained that forests and wood products are much more present in our daily lives than people think.
