Happiness is a deep-seated yearning shared by all members of the human family and should be available to all.

That's the message of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for International Day of Happiness observed on 20th March each year.

The Secretary-General says the aspiration for happiness is implicit in the pledge of the United Nations Charter to promote peace, justice, human rights, social progress and improved standards of life.

As part of the activities to mark the day, singer Pharrell Williams, composer of the hit "Happy" is collaborating with the UN Foundation.

Fans have been encouraged to post YouTube videos of themselves demonstrating their happiness to Pharrell's#HAPPYDAY and Pharrell's site 24 Hours of Happiness.

On the International Day of Happiness, he will spotlight the best submissions at noon in each time zone.

Non-governmental organizations will also ring the peace bell at 12:57 p.m. for vernal equinox which marks the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere.
