An image of Palestinian refugees queuing for food at a camp in Syria is expected to be displayed simultaneously on electronic billboards in New York and Tokyo on Thursday

The image, which has become an icon of the ongoing Syria conflict shows refugees in the Yarmouk camp waiting for food aid delivered by the UN.

The displaying of the image will be accompanied by a flash-mob of people who will hold up pieces of bread to signify the challenges the UN is facing in delivering food to the camp.

Around 20,000 Palestinian refugees are still trapped in Yarmouk as the conflict continues.

Almost 40 million people engaged on the Twitter social media platform to trigger the projection of the image, which has been funded by a private donor.

It will flash up on billboard's in New York's Times Square and its Asian equivalent in Tokyo's Shibuya district.
