"Equality for Women is Progress for All"

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka

Equal participation of women in all aspects of the development of society benefits everyone.

That's the message of the Executive Director of UN Women, the United Nations entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women on the eve of International Women's Day observed on 8 March.

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said if more women were to finish secondary school, there would be less infant mortality because the mothers would know how to look after their children.

She added that if women farmers were to receive inputs for agriculture such as fertilizers and machinery, more people would have enough food because of increased production.

"We also know that in companies that involve women at high level and engage them fully, those companies are much more competitive and profitable. In fact, amongst Fortune 500 companies, it has been argued that they are 34 per cent more competitive then their counterparts when it comes to returning profits to shareholders." (

The theme for this year's International Women's Day is "Equality for Women is Progress for All".
