Ending gender inequality is underlined as Commission on Status of Women begins annual session

The 2015 deadline for meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGS) to eradicate extreme poverty and improve people's lives is around the corner.

These goals include the provision of universal primary education, promoting gender equality and improving maternal health.

And so as the Commission on the Status of Women begins its annual it is focusing on "Challenges and Achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls".

UN Women, the United Nations entity for gender equality, says that progress in meeting the eight goals known as MDGs is uneven, particularly for women.
