Ban urges respect of democratic process in Maldives

Listen /

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

A decision of the Maldives' Supreme Court to remove the country’s election commissioners two weeks before parliamentary polls is a cause for concern according to the Secretary-General.

Ban Ki-moon called on "all political leaders to respect the democratic process' and allow for a peaceful, inclusive and credible vote.

In a statement issued by his Spokesperson, Ban also urged the respect for the rule of law and the will of the Maldivian people.

In mid-November, the Secretary-General welcomed the conclusion of the run-off of the presidential election in the Maldives following several months of delays due to an annulment and allegations of electoral fraud.

The vote was finally held on 9 November, leading to the election of President Yaamin Abdul Gayoom.
