The success of elections in Afghanistan will help stabilize the country and instill confidence in the future, according to the UN Special Envoy to Afghanistan, Jan Kubis.

On 5 April Afghans will elect a new president as well as their provincial council leaders.

Current President Hamid Karzai will not be seeking re-election because of term limits.

The elections will mark the country's first democratic transfer of power.
