Innovative approaches to getting more women into leadership positions around the world were discussed at a conference recently held at the United Nations. Representatives from the UN as well as the public and private sectors took part in the "Power of Collaboration Summit" to discuss new ways to work together to accelerate the promotion of women. It's hoped the discussions would also strengthen the role of women in the debate on the Post-2015 Development Agenda in which the UN is currently engaged. Daniel Dickinson spoke to Janet C Salazar of Impact Leadership 21, the non-governmental organisation that is organizing the conference. He asked her what she expected the conference to achieve.
End "indiscriminate killings" in CAR urges refugee chief
The UN's top refugee official has called for an end to what he described as "indiscriminate killings and massacres" that have been taking place in the Central African Republic. António Guterres, the High Commissioner of the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, was recently in the county, which has been suffering from internal conflict for more than a year. When an emergency strikes it is women and children who are generally first to seek refuge. Mr Guterres toured a camp for internally displaced people at the airport in Bangui, the capital of CAR. UNHCR's Edith Champagne reports.
Women encouraged to become journalists in South Sudan
Women are being encouraged to enter journalism in South Sudan bucking a trend which has typically seen only men employed as journalists. Media workers in South Sudan have often reported harassment and physical hardship as a normal part of the job, a situation which has deterred many women from entering the profession. But now, the Union of Journalists in South Sudan is actively encouraging women to get involved. Regina Gorle has been speaking to Edward Ladu, the General Secretary of the union and began by asking him about the role of female reporters in South Sudan.
