Vision of integration across Arab world proposed by UN

Listen /

Countries across the Arab world can gain "enormous benefits" if they follow a path towards social, political and economic union, according to a report being launched by the United Nations.

The report by the UN's Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, (ESCWA) lays out a vision for integration which it says is now an "urgent necessity," if the region wants to continue to develop.

One of the authors is Abdallah Al Dardari, chief economist at ESCWA. He says integration should be measured.

"What we are proposing is a strategy, but at the same time incremental, gradual, practical steps, that could be implemented within the current political framework and environment in the region."

Initial steps towards closer economic integration could include reducing the costs of transportation between Arab countries, easing labour restrictions and reducing trading tariffs.
