Emergency supplies are loaded at UNHCR’s central emergency stockpile in Dubai.

The operations of the UN refugee agency's warehouse facilities in Dubai increased by 100 per cent in 2012 and 2013 from the previous year according to data released on Thursday.

UNHCR says last year there were more than 100 outgoing shipments to over 36 countries around the world compared to 22 countries in 2012.

The data shows that the Dubai stockpile handled close to 2,060 containers, with emergencies in Syria, the Philippines and the Central African Republic receiving multiple shipments in 2013.

UNHCR says the bulk of the shipments from Dubai were for the Syria emergency which has already displaced about 2.4 million Syrians to neighbouring countries.

The agency sent hundreds of containers and trucks carrying thousands of tents, blankets, sleeping mats, buckets, kitchen sets, jerry cans, and plastic sheets to people in need in Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Turkey and Lebanon.

UNHCR points out that the total value of the items was $16.3 million.

It thanked the United Arab Emirates for supporting its operations to help displaced people around the world.
