Significant progress has been made in rebuilding the lives of Filipinos following the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan. The typhoon hit the Philippines in November, killing over 6,000 people and destroying the livelihoods of millions of others. The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, Valerie Amos, has been in the country visiting the worst hit areas, to assess the current situation.
Asian developing countries dominate ICT goods trade
Countries in Asia represent the leading production hub of information and communication technology products (ICT), accounting for two thirds of world exports. That's according to the latest data released by the UN trade agency UNCTAD. China alone counted for 30 per cent of the total export market for ICT goods, the report found. Because of the growing importance of Asia both as a producer but also as a market for ICT goods, foreign companies are compelled to establish a strong presence in the region, Torbjorn Fredriksson, ICT analyst at UNCTAD told Patrick Maigua.
International Year of Small Island Developing States launched at UN
The International Year of Small Island Developing States has been launched by the United Nations to put a spotlight on the special needs of island nations. The UN says the countries, known as SIDS, need international support in their efforts to build resilient economies. Many face the threat of rising sea levels and what has been described as "total inundation" caused by global warming.
