UN Syria envoy to meet Russian and American representativesListen /
Representatives from Russia and the United States are due to meet the joint UN and Arab League envoy for Syria in Geneva on Thursday as the diplomatic effort to end the civil war in the country intensifies.
A second round of peace talks has been taking place in the Swiss city between the Syrian government and opposition forces but no significant progress has been made.
The joint envoy Lakhdar Brahimi will meet the Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Gennady Gatilov and United States Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman.
The two countries were the driving force behind the peace talks in Geneva which aim for a political solution to the conflict.
Russia is a close ally of Syria, while the US has supported the opposition.
Mr Brahimi continues to mediate between the two Syrian delegations, holding a series of face-to-face meetings as well as individual consultations.
