UN Special Envoy concerned over persistent insecurity in BanguiListen /
General Babacar Gaye, Special Representative for the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in the Central African Republic (BINUCA) has condemned the "unnecessary and indiscriminate" use of violence in the city of Bangui.
Compounding the situation, Jean-Emmanuel Ndjaroua, a member of the National Transition Council, was killed by unidentified armed assailants over the weekend.
In a statement released on Monday, General Gaye urged CAR authorities to establish a functional criminal chain to bring to justice those responsible for these crimes.
He also reminded armed groups that the Security Council demands that they immediately lay down their arms.
General Gaye said the violence had created a "climate of fear" and encouraged the emergence of acts of banditry.
