UN chief welcomes Ukraine agreementListen /
An agreement reached between President Yanukovych of Ukraine and opposition leaders on a process for the settlement of the crisis in the country has been praised by the UN Secretary-General.
Ban Ki-moon called the Ukrainian President to welcome what his spokesperson called an "important step forward."
Dozens of people have been killed in violent clashes between the government and protestors in the capital Kiev.
Demonstrations began in the country in November 2013 to press for closer integration with the European Union.
The Secretary-General said it was critical to ensure the swift implementation of the agreement in order to de-escalate the situation in the country and initiate a peaceful solution to the crisis.
He also welcomed the signing into law of the resolution passed by Parliament on Thursday, which has resulted in the start of a pullback by police from the centre of Kiev.
