Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

The UN Secretary-General is urging the authorities and anti-Government protestors in Thailand to resolve their political differences and disputes peacefully.

Mr. Ban Ki-moon issued a statement on Wednesday condemning the recent escalation of violence in different parts of the country.

Armed attacks against the protestors resulted in the death of at least two children last weekend.

Martin Nesirky is the UN Spokesperson.

"The Secretary-General believes strongly that there should be no place for violence by any side in resolving political differences and disputes. The Secretary-General urges the parties and all concerned to respect human rights and the rule of law. He strongly urges the parties to engage as soon as possible in meaningful and inclusive dialogue toward ending the crisis and advancing genuine reform."

The Secretary-General expressed his readiness to assist the parties and the Thai people in any way possible.
