Ukraine's territorial integrity, unity and sovereignty must be respected: UK

Listen /

The United Kingdom's Ambassador to the UN has expressed deep concern at the recent developments in Ukraine's Crimea region and particularly of Russian troops' deployment.

Following a UN Security Council meeting on Friday, Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant urged "all parties both in and outside of Ukraine to exercise restraint".

He also asked the parties to "avoid actions and rhetoric" that would inflame tensions further or impact on Ukraine's sovereignty in any way.

"The United Kingdom believes that any newly deployed troops that do not answer to the Ukrainian government should withdraw. My prime minister and my foreign secretary have been in touch with leaders of both the new Government in Ukraine and Russia in the course of today. And they have stressed the need for every country, to respect the territorial integrity, the unity and the sovereignty of Ukraine."

The UK Ambassador said Foreign Secretary William Hague had welcomed assurances from Ukraine's acting President Turchinov that he would respect the rights of all minorities in Ukraine.

William Hague is expected to travel to Ukraine on Sunday.

Ambassador Grant added that a "stable and prosperous Ukraine" was in everyone's interest.
