Children in Syria have been subjected to "unspeakable" suffering in nearly three years of civil war in the country, according to the first United Nations report on how the conflict has affected young people.

The report accuses the Syrian Government and allied militia of being responsible for countless killings, as well as the maiming and torture of children.

It also blames the opposition for recruiting youngsters for combat and using terror tactics in civilian areas.

The Secretary-General of the UN, Ban Ki-moon called for an end to the violations.

The report covers the period from March 2011 to November last year of a conflict that has now left more than 100,000 people dead.

Government and opposition representatives met at peace talks in Geneva last week, but were unable to find a way to end the hostilities.
