Sudan Sanctions Committee to brief the Security Council

Listen /

Security Council Chamber

A panel of experts monitoring United Nations sanctions imposed on Sudan in connection with the conflict in Darfur is expected to deliver its monthly briefing to the Security Council.

The four experts were assigned by the Council to assist the "1591" Sudan Sanctions Committee set up in March 2005.

The panel is tasked with helping the Committee monitor an arms embargo, travel ban and assets freeze.

It's also responsible for informing the sanctions committee about individuals who impede the peace process, violate international law or are responsible for offensive military flights in Darfur.

As a result, the Security Council has designated four individuals as subject to travel ban and asset freeze.

Gaffar Mohammed El Hassan, Major-General and Commander of the Western Military Region for the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in Darfur, is on the sanctions' list.

Also on 11 February, the Council is holding consultations on Sudan and South Sudan, as well as on the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS).

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS is expected to brief.

Jocelyne Sambira, United Nations.
