Sergeyev: Ukraine authorities used "excessive force against own people"

Listen /

Yuriy Sergeyev, Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN.

The government of Ukraine has used force against its own people, violating the Constitution and laws of the country.

That's what Yuriy Sergeyev, the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations told the press on Monday as he briefed them on the political situation in his country.

The first time was on 30 November to 1 December 2013, when riot police brutally beat students during a peaceful demonstration in Kiev, Ambassador Sergeyev explained.

"In defense of these students, the entire Ukraine rose. Authorities did not hear any voice of their own conscience, not even calls of other countries, even the United Nations, to find peaceful solutions. The government went further in their repressions which only intensified the resistance of the people and led to blood. Many many dozens of human lives … this became a price of political ambitions… the President, the government… even at the price of their posts."

Ambassador Sergeyev said a truce between the Government and the opposition was only reached on 21 February through international mediators.
