The potential for mobile technologies to aid teaching and learning is being examined by the UN's cultural organization, UNESCO in Paris, France.

The annual Mobile Learning Week will focus on how cell phones and other communication technologies can boost learning in regions where traditional educational resources are lacking.

A series of workshops will look at how mobiles can help teachers work more effectively in different contexts.

UNESCO says it also wants to better understand how the technology can help prepare new teachers and provide professional development to working teachers.

It is estimated that six billion out of the world's population of seven billion people now have access to mobile phones, although not all of those devices are connected to the internet.
