The International Year of Small Island Developing States has been launched by the United Nations to put a spotlight on the special needs of island nations.
The UN says the countries, known as SIDS, need international support in their efforts to build resilient economies.
Many face the threat of rising sea levels and what has been described as "total inundation" caused by global warming.
