• The people of Guinea-Bissau preparing for elections scheduled on 13 April this year. The West African country has been beset by military coups and political assassinations. The Security Council was on Wednesday briefed by the top UN envoy in the country as preparations for the elections continue.

• A new law in Uganda which imposes life sentences in prison for homosexuality has been condemned by the United Nations. The UN human rights office said the legislation would mean that lesbians, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people would face institutionalised discrimination. It added that the law violated fundamental human rights.

• Hundreds of children in South Sudan got separated from their families in the chaos that was created by the recent conflict between government and rebel forces. Some of the children have been rescued and brought to a centre in the capital, Juba where they are cared for while their families are traced. Many of the children are still traumatized by what they have experienced at their tender age.
