Countries around the world are being encouraged to devote Thursday to promoting activities in the pursuit of social justice.

The World Day of Social Justice which is marked annually on 20 February encourages the breaking down of barriers that people face because of gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability.

In a message to mark the day the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon said the gap between the poorest and the wealthiest around the world was wide and growing.

He called for individuals to be empowered through decent work and for people to be supported through social protection.

He also urged that the voices of the poor and marginalised be heard.
