Concern raised about deteriorating conditions in Fallujah, Iraq

Listen /

Concern has been raised by the UN over what has been described as the "rapidly deteriorating conditions” in Fallujah in Iraq.

Over 63,000 people have fled their homes in Anbar Province where Fallujah is located following an upsurge in skirmishes between Iraqi troops and Al-Qaeda-linked fighters.

Food stocks and drinking water in the province are said to be running low.

The sanitation situation is poor and there's limited access to health care.

Nickolay Mladenov, the head of the United Nations mission in Iraq (UNAMI) said many residents are caught up in the fighting.

He appealed for "all sides to address the causes of violence through dialogue and the political process and to help rebuild Anbar.

The UN continues to urge for humanitarian access to Fallujah.
