A UN Special Envoy for Iraq, Nickolay Mladenov, has strongly condemned an assassination attempt against the country's Speaker of parliament.

Mr. Osama Al-Nujaifi's convoy was attacked in the city of Mosul in Ninewa Province Monday afternoon.

Martin Nesirky, the UN Spokesperson, said the UN Envoy wished a speedy recovery to those who were injured in the incident.

"Mr. Mladenov urged all leaders to unite against terrorism, which is affecting all segments of Iraqi society. He called on the people of Iraq to support the security forces, local authorities and the tribes of Anbar in their fight against terrorism and to provide humanitarian support to those affected by the fighting. In addition, he called on all sides to help rebuild Anbar through investment and socially inclusive policies and to address the causes of violence through dialogue and the political process."

Violence continues in Anbar province where 300,000 Iraqis have been displaced because of insecurity, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The agency continues to receive reports of civilian casualties and sustained hardship in communities impacted from the fighting.

The surge in violence witnessed in the province is due to sectarian violence as well as clashes between Iraqi soldiers and Al-Qaeda-linked groups.
