Afghan election "opportunity" to engage internationallyListen /
Forthcoming presidential and provincial elections in Afghanistan provide an opportunity for the country to engage with the international community according to the UN's political chief.
Eleven candidates are fighting the presidential election on 5 April which will mark the first ever transfer of power in the country's history from one elected president to another.
The Under Secretary-General for political affairs at the UN, Jeffrey Feltman, said the elections will help to build the credibility of the country.
"I think this is an opportunity for the people and government of Afghanistan to send a signal internationally that will maintain the focus on the type of partnership that Afghanistan wants to see going forward." (11″)
The United Nations through its mission in the country, UNAMA, is providing technical assistance in the organization of the elections, following a request by the Afghan authorities.
