At least 490 people lost their lives in ethnic violence in northern Kenya in 2013, according to the UN's humanitarian office, (OCHA).

The agency said over 1,200 others were injured and more than 47,000 displaced.

It added that there had been a "dramatic escalation" of violence in December.

OCHA said that "localized clashes" were due to competition over political representation, land and resources.

The most affected areas were Moyale, Mandera County and Tana River County.
