UN chief appoints adviser for Camp Hurriya in Iraq

An American official has been appointed by the UN Secretary-General to facilitate the relocation of Iranian exiles being housed in a camp in Iraq.

Jane Holl Lute, who is a former United States Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security will serve as the Secretary-General's Special Adviser for the Relocation of Camp Hurriya Residents outside of Iraq.

The residents of Camp Hurriya, a former United States military installation, were moved from Camp Ashraf, 40 kilometres north of Baghdad, in 2012.

They were members of the People's Mujahadeen of Iran who set up camp in Iraq in the 1980s with the support of the late President Saddam Hussein to fight against the Iranian government.
