The end of June deadline for the elimination of Syria's chemical weapons can be met, according to the head of the mission overseeing the operation.
Sigrid Kaag, the Special Coordinator of the Joint Mission of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the United Nations briefed the Security Council on Wednesday.
Ms Kaag spoke to reporters afterwards.
"We talked about the security challenges. We talked about a forward outlook and the Council expressed, of course, a wish for a collective expectation that progress is now sustained, that momentum is visible and that the end of June 2014 deadline for the complete elimination of the chemical weapons programme of the Syrian Arab Republic will indeed be attained." She added that there is constructive cooperation from the Syrian authorities.
Ms. Kaag told reporters that some of the chemical weapons materials will destroyed aboard a United States ship and others will be go to different countries for destruction.
