Delegations of the Syrian government and the opposition are expected to meet face-to-face in Geneva on Friday to start talks to end the crisis in their country.

The three-year conflict has claimed the lives of more than 100,000 people and left 11 million others in need of humanitarian assistance.

On Wednesday a conference was held in the Swiss resort of Montreux as the United Nations continued its effort to get the Syrian parties to end the fighting in the country.

The UN and Arab League envoy for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, has been meeting with both delegations separately before bringing them to the same room on Friday.

He warned that he was under no illusion that it would be easy.
