The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he was "humbled" by a visit to a camp hosting Syrian refugees in Iraq.

Alongside UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres and UN Humanitarian Affairs chief Valerie Amos, the Secretary-General expressed solidarity with the displaced people.

"I stand here humbled by what I have seen in this Kawrgosik refugee camp. I am particularly saddened to see so many young children and women and vulnerable groups of people who suffer from this man-made tragedy. I am here to send our strong solidarity and support to all the refugees who came from Syria, on behalf of the United Nations and the international community."

On Wednesday, the Secretary-General will attend a pledging conference in Kuwait to raise money from the international community for humanitarian aid for Syria.

Mr. Ban said he hopes that a Syrian-led peace process will ultimately enable Syrian refugees to return to their homes.
