Iran invited to UN-backed Syria peace talksListen /
Iran has been invited by the United Nations to take part in peace talks on Syria, which are due to take place in Switzerland on Wednesday.
The talks are aimed at securing a transitional government in Syria and bringing an end to three years of civil war in which over 100,000 people have been killed.
On Sunday, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif had assured him that Tehran would play a positive role at the meeting.
Syria’s main political opposition group had earlier agreed to attend the talks in Montreux.
Secretary-General Ban said the Conference was a "long-awaited chance to end the violence and begin putting the country back together."
