"Great courage" of Iraqi security forces lauded by UN Security CouncilListen /
The Iraqi security forces have been recognized for their "great courage" by the UN Security Council for their opposition to Al-Qaida associated militants.
In a statement released on Friday in New York, the Council said it deplored "in the strongest terms" the recent events in the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah where militants have launched major offensives.
It expressed its strong support for the continued efforts of the Iraqi Government to protect its people.
Earlier in the week, in Baghdad, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Special Representative Nickolay Mladenov said that the situation in Fallujah was particularly concerning as existing stocks of food, water and life-saving medicines had begun to run out.
Over 5,000 families have fled the fighting and sought refuge in neighbouring provinces.
