Fighting that broke out in mid-December in South Sudan is continuing with thousands of people displaced.

The crisis was sparked by a confrontation between soldiers loyal to President Salva Kiir and those supporting former Vice President Riek Machar who was sacked in July.

Over one thousand people are estimated to have died in the violence in a country that is struggling to stand on its feet since it became independent from Sudan in 2011.

To find out more about the situation in the country, UN Radio's Derrick Mbatha spoke on the line to Juba with Joseph Contreras, a spokesperson for the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
