UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is in the Philippines this Friday, 20 December, where he is holding meetings with Government officials and speaking to the victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan.

The Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General issued a statement earlier confirming his visit to the Island nation.

Mr. Ban Ki-moon will also receive an update on the relief and recovery efforts by the UN and its partners in support of the Government of the Philippines.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that 15 million people have been affected by the disaster.

Aid efforts are slowly transitioning from the initial response phase to long-term recovery, the agency adds.

Over the weekend, the Secretary-General will also visit the town that has suffered the most damage, Tacloban, where he will assess the aftermath of the typhoon firsthand.
