Paying tribute to Nelson Mandela, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, UN Women Executive Director, said the late icon "was like a father" to her and many others.

Using his clan nickname, "Madiba" she said Mandela was an ardent supporter of women's rights.

He also helped promote the goals and the principles of the United Nations, and of UN Women, by pushing for the freedom of all beings, she added.

Ms. Mlambo-Nguka sat down with UN Radio's Derrick Mbatha and first spoke about her reaction to the news that the South African freedom fighter had passed away.
