Secretary-General welcomes adoption of new Lima DeclarationListen /
Delegates at a United Nations conference in Lima, Peru, have reaffirmed the importance of building a life of security, prosperity and dignity for all.
That is what UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in remarks on Monday to the General Conference of the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
Mr. Ban congratulated participants for adopting the new Lima Declaration which focuses on inclusive and sustainable industrial development.
It follows a declaration of the same name signed 40 years ago.
"This new Lima Declaration of UNIDO is an encouraging milestone. It points the world more firmly in the direction of inclusive and sustainable industrial development. And it offers important guidance as the world sets its sights on the year 2015 – a historic opportunity in our shared work to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, combat climate change and adopt an inspiring new development agenda for the future." High-level delegations from more than 170 countries are attending the conference, which runs through Friday.
