Nelson Mandela remembered at United Nations Office in GenevaListen /
• The UN Office in Geneva on Tuesday held a commemoration in honour of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela who died on 5 December. The event included the lighting of candles symbolizing the unity of the world in mourning Mandela. The global icon was laid to rest at his home village of Qunu in South Africa on Sunday 15 December 2013.
Security Council told of drug trafficking in West Africa and Sahel
• The Security Council on Wednesday met to discuss combating drug trafficking in West Africa and the Sahel. The UN estimates that $1.25 billion worth of cocaine is trafficked through West Africa each year. The Council also heard about efforts to combat the scourge which threatens peace and stability in the region.
Leaders of South Sudan are urged to stop violence
• The UN this week expressed concern about fighting which broke out between members of the South Sudanese army in Juba on Sunday. The clashes were reportedly sparked by an alleged coup attempt. Dozens of people, including civilians have been killed and scores of others wounded in the violence. The UN has urged South Sudan authorities to stop the violence and start a dialogue with the opposition.
