UNICEF calls for greater respect for Syria’s children.

The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) is expressing outrage following recent deadly attacks on schools in and around the Syrian capital, Damascus.

UNICEF says five children were reportedly killed and 11 injured in their classrooms when their school, located in a suburb of the capital, was hit by shells on Monday.

That same day, four children and their driver were reportedly killed after a shell hit their school bus, the agency adds.

UNICEF says these incidents follow a string of shelling attacks on Damascus schools over the past three weeks.

The UN agency is calling for all those with influence in Syria to respect the sanctity of children's lives and ensure that schools remain a place of safe refuge.
