Thousands of people in Viet Nam escaped the wrath of Typhoon Haiyan thanks to preparedness and mitigation measures implemented by the authorities, the United Nations office in the country reports.

The typhoon, which slammed the Philippines on Friday, also hit parts of north and central Viet Nam before weakening and changing course.

In a statement on Tuesday, UN Resident Coordinator in Viet Nam Pratibha Mehta praised the country's government for proactive measures taken ahead of the storm, including the evacuation of nearly 800,000 people.

Typhoon Haiyan was the 14th storm of this season so both civil and military authorities were fully prepared and provinces had stockpiles of food, water, and other supplies in place, the statement continued.

The UN office adds that the full impact of the typhoon is currently being assessed.
