The United Nations stands ready to continue to support democratic progress and prosperity in the Maldives, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in welcoming the conclusion of the country's run-off presidential elections.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Mr. Ban said "Once again, the people of the Maldives have turned out to vote in impressive numbers, showing their determination to choose their next president, despite the many obstacles and delays."

Abdulla Yameen and former President Mohamed Nasheed were vying for the presidency in a process that had to be rescheduled three times. Mr. Yameen was inaugurated president on Sunday having secured just over half the vote.

The UN Secretary-General said the close contest highlights the need for the new administration to engage the opposition in a constructive manner and to lead the country in the interest of all Maldivians.

He added that preliminary assessments by international and domestic observers find that the election was administered in a transparent and professional manner.
