Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on all sides in Thailand to exercise the utmost restraint, refrain from the use of violence and to show full respect for the rule of law and human rights.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Spokesperson, Mr. Ban Ki-moon said he is concerned by the rising political tensions in Bangkok after following closely the events in Thailand over the last few weeks.

He notes in this regard the Government's welcome assurances that it will continue to respect the rights of people to hold peaceful demonstrations.

The Secretary-General is also concerned about reports of Government institutions being occupied by the protesters.

The Secretary-General strongly encourages all concerned to resolve their differences through genuine dialogue and peaceful means.
