There's a need to urgently address the "dire" situation in the Central African Republic (CAR), a senior UN official said on Friday.

The Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Jeffrey Feltman, delivered this statement on behalf of the Secretary-General, in the capital of Bangui.

Mr. Feltman is attending a meeting organized by the International Contact Group for CAR, which is working to help restore constitutional order in the war-torn country.

Quoting the Secretary-General, he said that "there is a chance to work together to reverse the downward spiral and to set the country on a path towards peace and stability."

Mr. Feltman met with the President of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso, and other senior African officials, and also held talks with the CAR's transitional authorities.
